MOZAMBIQUE ANGLERS PARADISE
Mozambique offers some of the world's best fishing and some of the most challenging big game fishing in southern Africa, particularly around Guinjata Bay and the deep waters of the Mozambique Channel. Marlin, sailfish and other huge fish weighing over 1,000 pounds (454kg) can be caught, however a catch and release system is encouraged to protect the natural resources. A number of centres along the coast also offer rock, surf and fly-fishing.
If you are visiting the Bazaruto area you have an excelent chance of cathcing large black and striped marlins especially between October nad December. The peak time for sailfish is July-August. The larges sailfish caught to date weighed 55kg..
The Bazaruto area also offers salt water fly fishing for the sought-after bonefish.
Spear fishing is also excellent however a licence is required and catches are restricted. Apply to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, P O Box 641, Maputo. Tel +258 1 425011/310 755, fax +258 1 421 796.
To launch a fishing boat you require a permit - normally available close to launch sites.

Various fishing charter outfits are available in the area on request.
The area offers excellent game fishing. For the keen angler, salt-water fly-fishing is a must. A huge variety of game fish can be found in abundance in the water near the Guinjata Resort. Regular bait fish can be seen in the bay jumping out of the water to escape the hungry mouths of Kingfish, Barracuda, Sailfish and Marlin.
Spear Fishing
Spear fishing is one of the favourite pastimes of the local population. For those who prefer this more
extreme
version of fishing, charters can be arranged, through various fishing charter outfits in the area.

Fishing is generally very good with our biggest attribute being that the local community are not seafarers which in turn means they have no impact on our offshore reef systems.
The area is also regarded as a reserve & has numerous environmental strategies in place. One of these is the ban on catching of bottom fish. This has a notable affect on the amount & size
of game fish to be found in the various fishing grounds in the area.
Pomene is based on a strip of land with the sea on one side and a huge estuary on the other. Estuary fishing can be great fun on light tackle with a variety of juvenile (& occasionally sizable) gamefish to be found. Fishing in amongst the mangrove waterways from a kayak can also be great fun with large green & red snapper lurking in the deeper pools.
The best fishing to be had is during the summer months between October & June...Febuary to April is generally outstanding with a large variety of game fish species that can be targeted. Species likely to be encounted are King mackerel, Queen mackerel, Queenfish, Wahoo, Ignobilis kingfish plus another 6/7 species of kingfish, Prodigal son, Green jobfish, Tuna, Sailfish & the occasional Marlin.....
Fresh water/inland fishing....
The Madocha river feeds the estuary & is accessible by kayak. This particular river way is completely untouched & is home to some really big Mozambique tilapia, bream species & catfish.
Kayaks (with optional guide) as well as deep sea fishing outings can be arranged)..all tackle, rods, bait, lures etc provided.

The Bazaruto Archipelago offers some of the most spectacular fishing in the world. Unspoilt and little explored, the Indian Ocean here with its deep Mozambique Channel harbours some of the world's most exciting game fish - species such as Kingfish, Queenfish, Barracuda, Mackerel and Yellowfin Tuna. Recreational and specialist fishermen are increasingly attracted to the Bazaruto Archipelago to try their hand at luring legendary species such as Giant Black Marlin, Sailfish or Wahoo. Even novice anglers are sure to be delighted with a catch!
Extending six miles out to sea, the Bazaruto Archipelago has been a National Park since 1971. Most fish species occur inside the reserve boundaries and a strong marine conservation policy of tag and release is ensuring the sustainable use of the resource. The Archipelago is known as Africa's most productive area for Black, Blue and Striped Marlin and has produced Black Marlin in excess of 1000 pounds. Apart from Black Marlin in the summer months
(October to March), there is a strong winter run of Sailfish (July to December) and a great variety of offshore species such as big Wahoo, Dorado, King Mackerel, Giant Trevally and Tuna. A diversity of inshore species on the leeward side of the islands means that Bazaruto is also an ideal destination for light-tackle and fly fishermen.
Indigo Bay offers a high quality Mozambique sport-fishing operation so that guests can experience the thrill of fighting one of the giants of the deep or reeling in a variety of game fish. Our operation has a strong tag and release policy and to date we have achieved an almost 100% release rate on all sailfish and marlin caught by guests. We support the Durban's Oceanographic Research Institute's tagging programme and in 2002 we won the prize for the most tagged fish out of all commercial charter operations along the southern African east coast.

Deep Sea Fishing
Ponta Mamoli has close access to some of the finest fishing sites on the East Coast of Africa. Most fishermen will have heard of Ponta Dobela, Ponta Milibangalala and the abundant reefs in this area. We have an 18 foot Z Craft catamaran used for half or full day charters with professional skipper, staff, tackle and snacks. Try your hand at a catch of kaakap, kingfish, couta, wahoo, dorado or tuna to name but a few gamefish species
.
Fly Fishing
The Complete Fly Fisherman featured a very informative article on deep sea fly fishing, lake fly fishing and rock and salt water fly fishing at Ponta Mamoli. Their February 2005 article 'Mozambique on a fly rod' answers any questions a fisherman might have.
Rock and Surf Fishing
Beat our record of a 53kg Kingfish caught from the beach in front of the resort by a novice fisherman
